About Kumon

Established in 1958, the Kumon franchise network extends to 629 franchises in the education sector. With over 59,000 students enrolled nationwide, it is a globally recognised brand in over 50 countries with a total of 3.6 million students. Are you passionate about education and running your own business? Then this is the perfect opportunity for you.

What They Offer

Kumon study centres help students improve their maths and English skills. The Kumon Institute of Education was founded by Toru Kumon in Japan. As a parent and gifted maths teacher, he created the Kumon Maths Programme for his son to help improve his maths abilities. Kumon is still founded on the original premise of helping students reach their full potential. This is done through the two subject programmes, which are complementary to the work that students cover in schools. Students build on their key skills and academic abilities at their own pace. Although Kumon does not follow a particular school curriculum, the teaching programme creates the right foundation for students to help them excel in their subjects.

The Franchise Offering

Kumon’s globally recognised franchise model allows Instructors to have a career that is both financially and socially rewarding. You’ll get comprehensive training and support to see you through on your journey. It is expected that the time to launch your business is in the region of three months. To get started, you’ll need to get in touch with Kumon, have some interviews, attend a Discovery Day or orientation, ask all the questions that you need answers to and then you’ll be supported in your efforts to launch your own Kumon centre. With over 11.5 million potential Kumon students across the UK, you can take advantage of the large market with potential for high returns and personal satisfaction.

Who Are They Looking For?

According to Kumon, you don’t necessarily have to have a background in education in order to become a franchisee. In fact, many of its current instructors come from a wide range of backgrounds including law, finance and business. Often, they have experienced the benefits of the Kumon method in their own families and decided to take it a step further. This is why their ideal franchisees are determined, degree-educated individuals who are passionate about education and helping children reach their full potential.

The Cost

If all this sounds like a great fit so far, you’ll probably be wondering what the cost is. A Kumon franchise falls in the low-investment category of franchises because the initial investment will be only £3,000, which goes towards your licence fee. This amount represents £1,500 for maths and £1,500 for English. In addition to this, you should also budget an additional £1,500 – £2,000 for marketing activities for your first 12 months in business. Other factors to consider include the rent and hire of premises as well as other minimal operating costs. It must be remembered that if you’re involved in a franchise resale, you will need to also pay a fee to the outgoing instructor for taking over their business.

As for profitability, you will be able to set your own fees, which are generally around £65 per subject, per month. Parents will pay this fee to you directly. In addition, you should aim to have between 150 and 200 subject numbers at your centre. Also important to keep in mind is that you’ll need to pay a fixed royalty fee for each student/subject. With all this in mind, you’ll be able to project your future income more accurately. And speaking of royalties, they will cover the Kumon learning materials, your ongoing training and support and more. But perhaps the best part is that you can also take advantage of rent and fit-out subsidies towards starting up in a dedicated venue.

Funding

The start-up fee is minimal and Kumon offers generous subsidies to centres opening in specific venues or areas. So, don’t hesitate to get in touch with Kumon to find out more about these areas and whether you can take advantage of the subsidies on offer.

Training and support

Training and Support

With Kumon, you’ll be thoroughly trained and supported throughout your business operations period. For starters, there’s an 11-day training programme at a flagship study centre. After this, you will be assigned a dedicated Kumon Area Manager, who will offer comprehensive support and advice in launching, running and marketing your Kumon study centre.
